The German healthcare system has transformed hospitals into “businesses” that, despite existing regulations, must compete and are subject to usual market mechanisms. Regardless of whether one finds this good and appropriate – especially when the “product” is health – individual hospitals or hospital groups cannot change this in the medium term and must therefore survive within these framework conditions.

The “corporate mindset,” in turn, is often not comprehensively internalized among first and second-tier executives in many healthcare organizations. On the one hand, this explains concepts and implementations that are difficult to comprehend from a business perspective – on the other hand, it complicates the substantive and economic development of many hospitals.
